One To Grow On

I feel like I'm in a transformative moment in my life, moving into the next phase of my personal growth as I strive to make physical, emotional and psychological changes and adjustments to what and where I have been before. As I'm 38, I can't help evaluating whether it's too late to make some changes in my life or whether I should "make do" with what I've built my life and self to be. Whenever I start to question if I've done enough in my life for myself or if I should start a new self-improvement journey, I think of this song from the movie, Camp, called the Century Plant, which, as you can see by the lyrics, quite literally says it's never too late for anything for anyone.

Outside my house is a cactus plant
they call the century tree.
Only once in a hundred years,
it flowers gracefully.
And you never know when it will bloom.

Hey! Do you wanna come out,
and play the game?
It's never too late.

Clementine Hunter was fifty four
before she packed up and came.
Old Uncle Taylor was eighty one
when he rode his bike
across the plains of China

And the sun was shining
on that day.
Just like today.

Do you wanna come out,
and play the game?
It's never too late.

Didn't know how to tell her
for over thirty years,
he kept locked up inside himself
and no one saw the tears.
And then she went away,
and he woke up that day

Now he brings roses
to his sweetheart,
she lives most anywhere.
He sees someone sufferin'
he knows that despair.
He offers them a rose
and some quiet prose,
'bout dancin' in the shimmerin' ballroom.
'Cause you never know when
they will bloom.

Hey! Do you wanna come out and play the game?
It's never too late...

Here's a scene where the cast performs "Century Plant" from the movie "Camp":

The only thing that ever seems to really hold me back from change and transformation is my own fear. I wonder then, if the following words aren't truer than I realize, and if fear of failure at trying to become the person I want to be has kept me from becoming that person:

And the day came
When the risk to remain
tight in the bud
was more painful
than the risk it took
to blossom

If you are going to change try not to change too much on the outside, okay? So many of us really like the way you look right now.

A very thought-provoking entry, Sean. I think that it is never too late to change, never too late to do something new. And I really like the last bit of poetry you quoted. I know those lines, but can't place who wrote them.

Ha! I looked it up - Anais Nin! That was who I was going to guess!

you are NEVER too old to change.

speaking for myself, I like a person who is constantly growing and learning and evolving. standing still and bitching that nothing ever happens will get you nowhere.

and so if you take a chance and fall flat, SO F-ING WHAT? try the same thing a different way, and you may just be surprised at the result.

just words of wisdom from someone who has already been there...
